Ginger: everything that you need to know, and more

It was introduced into Europe initially by the Romans, who used it as a medicinal remedy, but only became widely used in the Middle Ages, via the Arabs.

We, just like the Romans, have learned to use it to spice our dishes, but most of all to enjoy its advantages, deriving from its beneficial properties.

  1. Sore throat and nausea: chew a slice of ginger without swallowing it
  2. Joint pains: massage with essential oil of ginger
  3. Headache: dissolve the quantity of a tip of a teaspoon of ginger into a glass of water
  4. Improve the digestion: boil a slice of lemon and a slice of ginger in water
  5. Against hair loss: rub the juice of a fresh root on the scalp for around 2 months

It’s rich in antioxidants, vitamin B6, mineral salts (calcium, iron, phosphorous, zinc and potassium). And thanks to its active ingredients (essential oil, composed mostly of zingiberene, gingerol, shogaol, and zingerone) it can be used to contrast or prevent many physiological ailments:

  1. It has a protective action on the gastric mucus that helps digestion, it sooths in cases of swelling, it accelerates the metabolism and reduces hunger.
  2. It can reduce the feeling of nausea or car sickness.
  3. Thanks to its antibacterial and antibiotic properties it’s ideal for combatting seasonal colds and flus, coughs and headaches.
  4. It’s anti-inflammatory, is a natural painkiller and helps reduce muscular and joint pains.
  5. It helps to reduce cholesterol levels in the blood, and is therefore good for the heart.

Obviously it’s not enough on its own to have these effects on our bodies; for this reason it’s always a good idea to accompany ginger with a balance diet, together with your doctor’s advice!
